Class outing at the mind cafe, Saturday 22/3/2008 2.30 pm.
Booking is made under my (wonderful) name. haha

the mind cafe is a place where you can play board games and have some snacks and drinks. and mind you, snacks really mean snacks- things like chips and cookies. so it's better if you eat lunch before you go. You usually buy a package which includes x hours of boardgaming, drinks and 3 snacks or something. They serve food there of course, but it's really nothing that great.

On Week 8 Thursday (16/8) afternoon 3.15pm - 6.15pm, you are to go to LT2 or LT3 or Audi for your Math Practice Paper 1.

Paper 2 will be held on next next week, Week 9 Thu (23/8), 3.15pm to 6.15pm.

Pls bring your own writing materials and GC. Question paper and Formula Booklet will be provided. If you have valid reasons to miss the practice session, pls kindly inform your tutor and from there, to have an alternative arrangement to sit for the paper. For what to be tested in paper 1, pls refer to syllabus outline printed in your TYS (Page 9 - 11 for outline, content details on contents on page 12 - 19). Instructions and arrangement as per above. Any enquiries or concerns, pls direct to your math tutor.

The venues are already out but i can't open cause i don't have excel. Someone nice COULD check the venue (hehe) aka lulaifuo and save us mortals the hassle of checking. (jk)

Anyway, I think alot of you still don't really know what the BT topics are and i've taken the liberty to come and tell you myself. Yay!
Might I forewarn you against shock and disbelief that would naturally come when you see everything that dear hci wants of us. It is long, slimy and annoying, like Davey Jone's tentacles and 30 days is not nearly enough to finish what we have to study. I predict. Unless you forgo sleep. But of course, that'd be inhuman.

BIO: the whole core syllabus. all the nooses we saw on Pirates is looking pretty appealing now, aye.

CHEM: Stoichiometry, Atomic Structure, Gaseous State, Periodicity, Chem Bonding, Energetics, Reaction Kinetcs, Thermodynamics(which is energetics part 2 if you didn't know), Chemical Equilibria, Electrochemistry and of course ALL organic chemistry.

MATH: Graphing, inequalities, system of equations, Sequences and Series(no AP GP), P & C, Differentiation, Integration, Vectors, Complex numbers, Probability, Binomial/Poisson distributions, Normal Distributions(no approximations)

ECONS: Essay on market failure(public goods, externalities, demerit and merit goods, monopoly power, imperfect information, income inequality and solutions to all these market failures!!)

GP: Like, anything can be tested.

Now, be gone and study! Because if we don't, we get horrible results, and we're liable to ending up in Davey Jone's locker- neither among the living nor dead. Then we'll start hallucinating, licking rock crab things, killing ourselves over peanuts, spilling our brains all over the floor...

You've got to have enough steam to endure such intense mugging, like Sao Feng does ("MORE STEAM!"), so you can start by adopting a positive attitude!

Mayflower

The town of El Paso, Texas claims the first thanksgiving held in what is now the United States, but it was not a harvest celebration. Spaniard Don Juan de Oñate ordered his expedition party to rest and announced North America's first thanksgiving mass celebration on April 30, 1598.
The Virginia colony
A collective prayer of thanksgiving was held in the Virginia Colony on December 4, 1619 near the current site of Berkeley Plantation, where celebrations are still held each year in November.[1]
Pilgrims
The Pilgrims were particularly thankful to Squanto, the Native American who taught them how to catch eel, grow corn and who served as an interpreter for them (Squanto had learned English as a slave in Europe). Without Squanto's help the Pilgrims might not have survived in the new world. The explorers who later came to be called the "Pilgrims" set apart a day to celebrate at Plymouth immediately after their first harvest, in 1621. At the time, this was not regarded as a Thanksgiving observance; harvest festivals were existing parts of English and Wampanoag tradition alike.
Difference
The village in Plymouth, known as Patuxet to the Wampanoag people, was abandoned about three years earlier following a plague that killed all of its residents. Because the disease involved hemorrhaging, the "Indian fever" is assumed to have been fulminating smallpox introduced by European traders. The outbreak had been severe enough that the colonists discovered unburied skeletons in abandoned dwellings.[31] With the local population in such a weakened state, the colonists faced no resistance to settling there. This is unlike of traditional colonists who massacred the natives to obtain order in their new colonies.

Karl Marx

What is new?

Marx believed that the communist revolution would take place in advanced industrial societies such as France, Germany and England and the workers would rule. He is the founding father of communism and aimed to set up communities based on common ownership and an equal share of wealth.

Marx called for an end to democracy and the suffering of the poor and feel that the power should fall into the hands of the majority – the poor. Only then will the suffering of the poor end or so he advocates. He noticed how capitalism was contributing to the income equity – the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer as The capitalist factory owners and bankers had grown fabulously rich by exploiting a new class of industrial workers: the proletariat. The working class had no finished product to sell no property from which to make a profit. Their only means of making a living was to work for wages. Marx predicted that as time went by the working class would grow in numbers and would organise itself. Without them nothing in society could work. He believed that this was the force that could overthrow capitalism.

How did it change society?

Industrial revolution took place in many parts of the world, where communist gained power in placed like Russia, China and spreaded to countries like Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. (though not all of them gained power).

World War I also led to the Russian Revolution in the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, took power. The revolution dynamized workers around the world into setting up their own section of the Bolsheviks. Lenin claimed to be both the philosophical and political heir to Marx, and developed a political program, called "Leninism" or "Bolshevism", which called for revolution organized and led by a centrally organized "Communist Party."

Marx believed that the communist revolution would take place in advanced industrial societies such as France, Germany and England, but Lenin argued that in the age of imperialism, and due to the "law of uneven development", where Russia had on the one hand, an antiquated agricultural society, but on the other hand, some of the most up-to-date industrial concerns, the "chain" might break at its weakest points, that is, in the so-called "backward" countries.

In China Mao Zedong also claimed to be an heir to Marx, but argued that peasants and not just workers could play a leading role in a Communist revolution in 3rd world countries still marked by feudalism whose majority of workers were peasants, not industrial workers. This was termed by Mao as the New Democratic Revolution. As a departure from Marx's understanding of the socialist revolution that maintained that the revolution must take place with countries that have already gone through the capitalist stage of development first and have produced the proletarian class as the majority, which is to carry out the revolutionary transformation of society into a socialist country and communist world. Marxism-Leninism as espoused by Mao came to be internationally known as Maoism.

What was new about it

The Wealth of Nations is classic manifesto against mercantilism (the theory that large reserves of bullion are essential for economic success). Appearing in 1776, there was a strong sentiment for free trade in both Britain and America. This new feeling had been born out of the economic hardships and poverty caused by the American War of Independence. However, at the time of publication, not everybody was immediately convinced of the advantages of free trade: the British public and Parliament still clung to mercantilism for many years to come.

The Wealth of Nations also rejects the Physiocratic school's emphasis on the importance of land; instead, Smith believed labour was paramount, and that a division of labour would effect a great increase in production. One example he used was the making of pins. One worker could probably make only one pin per day. But if ten people divided up the eighteen steps required to make a pin, they could make a combined amount of 48,000 pins in one day. Nations was so successful, in fact, that it led to the abandonment of earlier economic schools, and later economists, such as Thomas Malthus and David Ricardo, focused on refining Smith's theory into what is now known as classical economics. Both Modern economics and, separately, Marxian economics owe significantly to classical economics. Malthus expanded Smith's ruminations on overpopulation, while Ricardo believed in the "iron law of wages" — that overpopulation would prevent wages from topping the subsistence level. Smith postulated an increase of wages with an increase in production, a view considered more accurate today.

One of the main points of The Wealth of Nations is that the free market, while appearing chaotic and unrestrained, is actually guided to produce the right amount and variety of goods by a so-called "invisible hand" (an image that Smith had previously employed in Theory of Moral Sentiments, but which has its original use in his essay, "The History of Astronomy"). If a product shortage occurs, for instance, its price rises, creating a profit margin that creates an incentive for others to enter production, eventually curing the shortage. If too many producers enter the market, the increased competition among manufacturers and increased supply would lower the price of the product to its production cost, the "natural price". Even as profits are zeroed out at the "natural price," there would be incentives to produce goods and services, as all costs of production, including compensation for the owner's labour, are also built into the price of the goods. If prices dip below a zero profit, producers would drop out of the market; if they were above a zero profit, producers would enter the market. Smith believed that while human motives are often selfish and greedy, the competition in the free market would tend to benefit society as a whole by keeping prices low, while still building in an incentive for a wide variety of goods and services. Nevertheless, he was wary of businessmen and argued against the formation of monopolies.

Smith vigorously attacked the antiquated government restrictions which he thought were hindering industrial expansion. In fact, he attacked most forms of government interference in the economic process, including tariffs, arguing that this creates inefficiency and high prices in the long run. This theory, now referred to as "laissez-faire", which means "let them do", influenced government legislation in later years, especially during the 19th century. (However this was not opposition to government. Smith advocated a Government that was active in sectors other than the economy: he advocated public education of poor adults; institutional systems that were not profitable for private industries; a judiciary; and a standing army.)

How did it influence society

The Wealth of Nations, one of the earliest attempts to study the rise of industry and commercial development in Europe, was a precursor to the modern academic discipline of economics. It provided one of the best-known intellectual rationales for free trade and capitalism, greatly influencing the writings of later economists.

There has been some controversy over the extent of Smith's originality in The Wealth of Nations. Some argue that the work added only modestly to the already established ideas of thinkers such as Anders Chydenius (The National Gain 1765), David Hume and the Baron de Montesquieu. Indeed, many of the theories Smith set out simply described historical trends away from mercantilism and towards free trade that had been developing for many decades and had already had significant influence on governmental policy. Nevertheless, Smith's work organized their ideas comprehensively, and so remains one of the most influential and important books in the field today.

There will be changes in the class bench arrangement!

According to Mr Pang, the allocation of class benches to CTs is in a total mess- some have 2, some have 1, others have 3. So they are going to standardize it and keep it to 1 per class. That means 2, for 06/07S72.

However, this means that more benches must be purchased, and if we continue with a horizontal arrangement, common sense tells you that there won't be space! So they will arrange it vertically(maybe) and somehow fit all the class benches in la.

Mr Pang will be making an announcement soon to clear the class benches. That means we must guard our precious angel mortal box!! omgg. Benches will be rearranged, and classes may be allocated to a different spot.

Oh, and the benches cost $600 each. Mr Pang appeals to your good will and love for HC not to vandalize/damage the precious class bench.

hello, people of 06S72, i bet no one comes here anymore, seeing that the tagboard is as ever, full of shit ass crap, and the last post was mingren's 'the most addictive game', which turned out to be unaddictive, boring and lame. no wonder he's addicted to it.

it's 21 dec and i am still in hong kong. hell, i've not been in Singapore since 15 nov(save for 12 hours on the 25 nov). You can imagine my growing worry for all the work I've left untouched, because half my work is in Singapore. In anticipation of the multitude of things I have to do in Singapore, including rushing work, xmas celebrations, and an annoying wisdom tooth extraction, I can only pray that you are not in the shit that I am in. I also pray that you've done your biology tutorials. There are 2 sets children. I haven't completed them, oh SHIT. I feel like killing myself sometimes. Remember, remember, yor biology homework. I find no reason why you should forget your biology homework.

Also, please study for your lecture tests in week 1. I think the topics are Molecular genetics of Cancer, Genetics of Viruses & Bacteria, Organisation & control of the prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Genome, Genetic Basis for variation. That's quite a handful so please start working on it, but I'm sure most of you have!

hello! okay i have a barbecue pit at home and skewers and stuff and my mum doesn't mind the class having a barbecue over here. (8th nov)

except my house is around seletar hills along yio chu kang road, and there's absolutely nothing nearby, since it is a residential area. on top of this, my house is boring. i have NO games, at all, not even pokemon on my computer(i deleted it because it was so embarrassing). in fact, let me give you a list of things i don't have in my house as a forewarning so in case you all are coming over, you actually remember to bring all these stuff. lest you want to die of boredom, that is:

1. VCDs. all my vcds are in hong kong! sorry.
2. xbox/playstation/any other weirdo gadgets
3. dota/maple/weird computer games that you have to install.
4. music. i am not your typical hip-hop listening teen. i don't like music that is too noisy or loud or explicit because i'm the antithesis of all of these. HAHA. right. anyways, if you're thinking of blasting candyshop/promiscuous girl etcetcetc, i'm sorry, i only have damien rice, deathcab,coldplay and the clientele for you and they are emooo. bring your own music! :)

Taxi Ride from Changi Safra Resort to Changi Village: $8.50

3 Hour trek from Changi Safra Resort to Changi Village, complete with unleashed dogs, spooky picture of woman with spear, lots of ants biting our legs, unhelpful police, weird racing cars, playing bridge in the middle of nowhere, taking pictures, aeroplane-watching, lots of singing, running, talking, whining, bitching and more walking and then depression when we saw that changi village was barely open (later my brother told me it was because it is hari raya puasa that's why it's not open. usually it is 24hours. WTF) and all this ends in a 100 m grand finale dash to 7-11 to get liquid joy into our mouths and then sleeping on coffeeshop tables like vagabonds.

All this?

hurrah, my heart is swelling with joy at the very thought of unearthing my bio tutorials which has been fossilised beneath heaps and heaps of notes, which i have so brutally ignored since promos ended.

anyway, in case you were wondering, this is an appeal to you to bring your:
1.molecular genetics of cancer,
2. genetic basis for variation,
3. org of eukaryotic and prokaryotic genome tutorials

and also, if you haven't already known, please attempt to attempt them, at the very least.
or we shall forever be lost; hurtling through the darkness of an abyss that only the very wretched has ever lived or breathed; sifting through the endless passages of a timeless space, only to emerge battered and bruised at the end of that journey, and learning that we are one of the *TOP 3 S7 classes*( starting from the back, no less).

Anyways, more updates on FoS!

1. Bball Girls
Our potent combi was thrashed by an even more potent combi from 73. Their secret weapon, Weiling, just kept scoring. And scoring. And scoring. >.< But well, our 72 trio still manage to score 6 points during the match. "Highly Commendable!"

2. Volleyball
Some times, even having the Vice Captain on our side isn't gonna work against a team with THREE freaking vballers. Our 72 vball team went down too. :'(

3. Table Tennis
All I know is that we won a game and Ben has decided to forfeit one game so that we can get tactical advantage in the loser's pool. The final match is on tmr so we shall see if we can claim any title. JIAYOU

4. Frisbee
Thanks to a walkover and a ~~scam~~ ~~cheating~~ ~~rule-breaking incident~~ aah you get the idea, 06s72 are crowned the 1st runner up for frisbee. We were thrashed senseless by 60 in the finals with a score of 7-1. All I can say is, that CH is not human. He has to be some kinda hybrid of dog/bird/horse to be that good. :P

Sidenote: YG has the funniest brother. He's only 10 and he ponned school, watched southpark, and say random things like "ASSASSINATE" while playing comp games. Tsk.

Hear hear! 06s72 is and will PWN this FoS 2006!

Here's a brief recap on the various matches played today! I wasnt able to catch everyone in action so some of them are based on animated hearsay from those who witnessed it. Ha. Pardon me if i'm wrong.

1. Floorball
Lost by 1-0. I heard it was a pretty tight match with the opponents scoring at the very last minute. Although I wasn't there to see it, everyone really pulled in a lot of effort in playing a game that no one has any experience in, ie Algernon the capt was sprinting around full court through out the entire course of the match, something like that.

2. Frisbee
It's quite surprising that we've made it this far. We've won the first match 5-1, with much thanks to Eugene the capt. He imba-ly saved all 5 goals by himself. The second match with 61 was a really close. By the end of the game we were tied 3-3, and had to determine the winning team with the Golden Goal. Really tense period there but we got through it! We won the match 4-3 and our win secured a place in the semis. Maybe we could live up to the 05s72's legacy of being the Frisbee Champs! Semis is tmr and we need all the support we can get.

3. Soccer
It was a sad case actually cos our 72 team scored 2 solid goals but we still didnt win because 6J scored in the penalty kicks. GRRRR. Bloody hell. We, the 72, should have won. 2 SOLID GOALS LEH. How can it be compared with penalty kicks? GRRR

4. Table tennis
With Ben the godlike Hwachong Table Tennis Captain on our side, we have nothing to fear. Ben and Marc owned. Put those two up there and they will win the match. Confirm. Yining and Tammy were a great sport for picking up table tennis! Jiayou for the next match!

5. Volleyball
Kai, the imba Vice Captain of Hwachong Volleyball Team, has imba-ed the match with her imba serve. All she needs to do is to hit the ball over and the opponent team goes in a frenzy. Repeat that 25 times and you'll get a rough idea of how that match went. Congratulations into making into semis/finals/whatever! JIAYOUU

6. Basketball (girls)
Kai, Wenrong and Tammy make one heck of a potent combi. They thrashed the 75 girls 12-4 even though those people were about their height or taller. Proves that height isnt that great a factor (aah hope for short people! *cough*me*cough*) Next Basketball match has been postponed to tmr. PLEASE SUPPORT.

7. Basketball (guys)
Perhaps the most eventful match of all. What has happened has caught all of us by surprise. Yaoguang, please take care of your head. Dont worry, the cut can be covered by your seh hair. Meanwhile, you can take the time to rest and pon school!

The match went on after that and we lost. :( But you guys, samuel, yaoguang, ben, daichao and kaiern will always remain the seh-est bball players of o6s72!

Harry Potter may seem like he lives in a world where wizards wave a wand and receive instant gratification but that's a view that needs to be demolished by the womping willow.

Scarcity exists in the magic world just as much as in the muggle world. There are a limited number of tickets to the quidditch world cup, magical creatures only shed so many feathers or hairs to go into wands and not everyone has an invisibility cloak.

JK Rowling's fictional world of magic, the latest instalment of which has just hit the bookshops, has its own central government (the Ministry of Magic), owl postal system, jail, hospital, news media, public transport (both train and bus), not to mention Gringotts Bank and a special wizard currency. There are enough institutions to make Adam Smith salivate.

With scarcity and a monetary system, the Harry Potter series should be a case study for any economics course. Here are the top 10 economic principles in Harry Potter:

Supply and demand

Wherever scarcity exists, markets emerge. A limited supply of Nimbus 2001 brooms and high demand for their sleek appearance and unparalleled speed drives up the price, so it's only affordable for people like Draco Malfoy.

Opportunity cost

In the Tri-Wizard cup, Harry stays behind to rescue Gabrielle, Fleur's sister, from the merpeople and then to help Diggory in the maze. Harry weighs the consequences of forgoing victory and decides it's more valuable to save others.

Comparative advantage

Critics complain that Hermione is a bookworm and not much of an action girl, but the young heroes simply exercise comparative advantage. Hermione is the brain, Harry is the dark arts defence expert and Ron is the chess strategist. The Weasley family wins the lottery in book five and they use the prize money on a trip to Egypt. This illustrates a classical economic theory that if households acquire more wealth unexpectedly (eg from a tax cut), they will spend the extra money and stimulate the economy.

Cheap labour

Hermione launches the SPEW campaign to save the house elves from indentured servitude in book four. The campaign fails to liberate the house elves as there is little incentive for the masters to get rid of free labour. But Harry does manage to liberate one elf, Dobby, who becomes fiercely loyal to him.

Externalities

"He who must not be named", or Voldemort, vastly underestimates the power of love because it is not a material or quantifiable thing. The sacrifice of Harry's mother gives him special protection against evil. Economists would dub this "ancient magic" a positive externality.

Profit-seeking

Gilderoy Lockhart, the defence against the dark arts teacher in book two, turns out to be a fraud who spends his time preening and writing novels. Call it greed but entities act in their own best interests, whether magical or muggle.

Venture capitalism

With his vast winnings from the Tri-Wizard cup, Harry invests in the enterprising Weasley twins. Fred and George leave Hogwarts in book five to start a joke shop similar to Zonko's. If the twins' swanky green alligator skin suits at the end are any indication, it seems the investment will pay off.

Noticeably absent in the Potter series is any tax system to fund the numerous public services. Who exactly is paying for a Hogwarts education or Sirius's prison stay in Azkaban?

Don't underestimate economic principles in Harry Potter. If only he who must not be named understood neo-classical endogenous growth theory, it might have been a different story.
